Driving with Star Yantra

Creating Car Art

I think I’ll write a bit about my past. Yantra is my third art car.  My first was “Zezzie the Girl”, a 1969 Karmen Ghia I purchased from a man in Mill Valley in 1990 or so.  I drove her a couple of years, then drove her to LA where she lived in my dad’s airplane hanger until I returned from Tokyo in 1995.

After three magic creative exploratory years in Tokyo, Shimokitazowa in fact, which in the early to mid 90s was the bohemian art mecca of Japan’s alt culture, I got the idea that I wanted to paint my car.  Ironically, I had no idea of Burning Man or art cars or anything the sort. It was just an idea I had to make driving around in circles and squares more fun.

Then I decided it was time to paint her.  I always allow my car’s color palette to determine my direction, and since Zezzie was kelly green, it became clear that she was going to be something bright and inviting.  I started with her interior, which to me seemed naturally inclined to be cow-themed, as she was a alive as a meadow.  She soon was replete with furry cow print seat covers, a astroturf dashboard and floor mats, and big yellow sunflowers underlining it all.  I drove around, all beautiful on the inside, revealing in my supposed stealth art secret for nearly six months before I ventured outside.

Her “outside” happened in a flurry of paint, as always. The ideas come and then the obsessive creative painting begins, and once started I cannot cease until completion.  Like my other cars, Zezzie was a vehicle for my writings, and I included a poem on the hood entitled, To the Mama of Stalactites, Jellyfish and Us.

zezzieozThe drivers door had a poem about the moment, done of course in a spiral of chakra colors, which proved interesting one evening when I was pulled over in Sausalito by not one, but three cop cars — since they really didn’t cite a reason for stopping me, I decided it was probably for driving without an Mercedes after 10pm!  Luckily it was Zezzie to the rescue, as I ended up giving six, very tall, well-intended boy scouts with guns a tour of my car which concluded with a spiral poetry reading and a lesson about how the root chakra ties into the crown and blah da blah da blah…what I remember most was driving away and seeing a line of uniforms waving to me in my rear view mirror.  Who says law enforcement attention has to be negative!

While many of my piers were bashing hippies, I was being initiated as the “real thing” by the likes of diggers and outlaw poets.  I learned it is never a bad thing to be called a hippie by those who lived it.
